2024 Total International Travel Volume from Top 20 Source Markets  

In December 2024, international visitor arrivals to the United States totaled 6,456,562, an increase of 9.5% from December 2023. Total arrivals for calendar year 2024 of 72,390,321 increased 9.1% from 2023 to a level of 91% of 2019 visitation

 

Outbound travel departures from the United States by U.S. citizens totaled 10,007,357 in December 2024, an increase of 7.7% from December 2023. Total departures for calendar year 2024 were a record-breaking 107,713,681, up 9.2% from to 2023

 

International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total international visitor arrivals of 72,390,321 increased 9.1% from 2023 to 91.1% of arrivals in 2019.
     
  • All world regions reported an increase in visitor volume to the United States from 2023 to 2024. 
    • The largest region in visitor volume was Western Europe with 13,067,365.
    • Asia recorded the largest percentage increase of 21.6%.
    • The world region that reported the smallest percentage increase in 2024 was Oceania with a 6.3% increase.
       
  • New York City was the largest port of entry for overseas visitors in 2024 (6,111,777), followed by Miami (4,757,596), and Los Angeles (3,361,708).
     
  • Of the top 20 largest source markets for international visitation to the United States, which together accounted for 85% of total visitation in 2024 (see chart above):
    • 5 surpassed 2019 levels: India (149% of 2019 visitation), Dominican Republic (114%), Columbia (113%), Ecuador (108%), and Italy (103%).
    • 8 were above 90% of 2019 levels: Canada (98%), Germany (97%), Spain and Ireland (both 95%), Mexico, Israel, and France (each 93%), and Brazil (91%).
    • 4 were between 78% and 85%: Netherlands (85%), United Kingdom (84%), Argentina (80%), and Australia (78%).
    • 3 were below 75%: South Korea (74%), China (57%), and Japan (49%).   


International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States for calendar year 2024 of 107,713,681 increased 9.2% from 2023 to a level of 108% of 2019 departures.
     
  • By world region, U.S. departures in calendar year 2024 were as follows:
    • 4 surpassed 130% of 2019 levels: Africa (160% of 2019 departures), Central America (145%), South America (141%), and Middle East (131%).
    • 3 were between 100% and 125%: Caribbean (121%), Europe (117%), and Asia (103%).
    • 2 were below 2019 departures: North America (98%), and Oceania (94%).

International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 6,456,562, increased 9.5% compared to December 2023 and represented 94% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for December 2019.
     
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 3,249,659 increased 5.8% from December 2023.
     
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Mexico (1,709,192), Canada (1,497,711), the United Kingdom (332,895), Brazil (225,255), and Japan (166,105). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 60.9% of total international arrivals.
     
  • Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, South Korea (-6%), France (-4.1%), and Spain (-5.1%) reported a decrease in visitor volume in December 2024 compared to December 2023.
     
  • The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for December were the United Kingdom (301,933), Brazil (215,604), Japan (141,203), Colombia (133,265), and Germany (128,491).
     
  • The top 5 overseas business arrivals for December were India (29,147), the United Kingdom (28,804), Japan (23,250), Germany (15,471), and South Korea (14,091).
     
  • The top 5 overseas student arrivals for December were India (25,930), China (20,251), South Korea (5,223), Taiwan (2,995), and Brazil (2,886).


International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 10,007,357 increased 7.7% compared to December 2023 and were 112.8% of total departures in pre-pandemic December 2019.
     
  • The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 50.1% and overseas was 49.9%.
     
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 4,193,202 (41.9% of total departures for December and 37% (YTD)). Canada recorded a year-over-year increase of 12.8%.
     
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (39,868,088) and the Caribbean (11,337,403) accounted for 47.5% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
     
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,545,511 departures. This accounted for 15.4% of all departures in December. Outbound visitation to Europe in December 2024 increased 11.6% compared to December 2023.

I-92/APIS International Air Passengers  

The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas+Canada+Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
