Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in April 2024:
International Arrivals to the United States
- Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,889,335, increased +5.2% compared to April 2023 and represented 83.6% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for April 2019.
- Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,820,940 increased +9.2% from April 2023.
- April 2024 was the thirty-seventh consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased on a year-over-year (YOY) basis.
- April 2024 was the fourteenth consecutive month that overseas visitors totaled over 2 million.
- Of the top 20 tourist generating countries to the United States, Canada (with 1,781,119), the United Kingdom (with 350,860), and Spain (with 64,915) reported a decrease in visitor volume in April 2024 compared to April 2023, with a -7.4%, -0.1%, and -8.1% change respectively.
- The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,781,119), Mexico (1,287,276), the United Kingdom (350,860), France (208,134), and India (175,211). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 64.6% of total international arrivals.
International Departures from the United States
- Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 8,072,519 increased 8.0% compared to April 2023 and were +106.3% of total departures in pre-pandemic April 2019.
- April 2024 was the thirty-seventh consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased on a YOY basis.
- The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 50.8% and overseas was 49.2%.
- Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,105,473 (38.5% of total departures for April and 41.6% (YTD)). Canada recorded a YOY increase of 12.9%.
- Combined YTD, Mexico (12,938,414) and the Caribbean (3,985,597) accounted for 54.5% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
- Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,630,759 departures. This accounted for 20.2% of all departures in April. Outbound visitation to Europe in April 2024 increased 4.6% compared to April 2023.

I-92/APIS International Air Passengers
The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas + Canada + Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
