April 2023 Total International Travel Volume

—In April 2023, International Visitor Arrivals to the United States Totaled 5,580,778, an Increase of 30.2% Compared to April 2022
—U.S. Citizen Outbound Travel Departures from the United States Totaled 7,545,396 in April 2023, an Increase of 26% Compared to April 2022

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in April 2023:

International Arrivals to the United States 

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,580,778 increased 30.2% compared to April 2022 and represents 79.2% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for April 2019, down from the prior month’s 83.4%.
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,583,769 increased +26.4% from April 2022.
  • April 2023 was the twenty-fifth consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased year-over-year (YOY).
  • Of the top 20 tourist-generating countries to the United States, Spain (with 70,616 visitors), Colombia (with 68,762 visitors), Ireland (with 42,165 visitors), and the Dominican Republic (with 38,639) reported a decrease in visitor volume in April 2023 compared to April 2022, with a -6.0%, -28.6%, -0.3%, and -6.0% change, respectively.
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,924,382), Mexico (1,072,627), the United Kingdom (351,279), France (180,818), and Germany (165,854). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 66.2% of total international arrivals.

International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 7,545,396 increased 26.0% compared to April 2022 and were 99.4% of total departures in pre-pandemic April 2019.
  • April 2023 was the twenty-fifth consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased YOY.
  • April 2023 year-to-date (YTD) total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States totaled 27,904,523, a YOY increase of 39.3%. The YTD market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 50.7%, and overseas was 49.3%.
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 2,874,049 (38.1% of total departures for April and 41.8% YTD). Canada recorded a YOY increase of 60.3%.
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (11,661,726) and the Caribbean (3,618,337) accounted for 54.8% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures, down 1.5 percentage points from March 2023.
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,559,428 departures. This accounted for 20.7% of all departures in April and 16.2% YTD. Outbound visitation to Europe in April 2023 increased by 49.4% compared to April 2022.

The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas + Canada + Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
