Global Steel Trade

SIMA Feature:

ITA released its new Global Scrap Monitor (GSM) continuing ITA’s expansion upon its various datasets tracking global steel and aluminum supply chains. Interest in the trade of steel and aluminum scrap, as well as growing understanding of the critical nature of these supply chains, has prompted ITA to release the GSM to track aggregate trade flows of these materials. GSM provides interactive charts in a readily accessible format on three standard aggregate product categories, Aluminum Scrap, Pig Iron/ Direct Reduced Iron, and Steel Scrap based on 6-digit international harmonized tariff schedule classifications.

ITA will host a public webinar on how to use and interpret data from the GSM dashboard on Thursday, May 23, 2024, 2:00 p.m. EST. To register, please email steel.license@trade.gov.

All steel mill imports into the United States require an import license for Customs entry summary. The steel import license is an automatic license used for data collection purposes only. Importers and customs brokers use this website to obtain their steel licenses prior to completing their Customs entry documentation.

Commerce publishes: (1) the U.S. Steel Import Monitor combines data from Census and import licenses, updated weekly; (2) the Global Steel Trade Monitor shows trends for top steel trading countries; (3) the Steel Export Monitor shows public U.S. steel export data; (4) the Melt and Pour Dashboard displays country of melt and pour data collected from SIMA's licensing application data. and (5) the Downstream Steel Monitor shows U.S. imports/exports of steel-containing products.
