This has been a great time to work in international trade!
First, I would like to formally welcome Penny Pritzker to the Department
of Commerce as
our new Secretary. Under her leadership, I am confident that our work
to support American businesses will only result in more successes – to the
benefit of American workers and our economy as a whole.
And there have been a lot of successes to talk about!
During Small Business Week, we highlighted some great examples on the Tradeology blog. From a San
Francisco Art Studio doing 90 percent of its sales overseas, to a small

force fields to protect infrastructure from lightning – thus proving the
International Trade Administration is showing its capabilities in several

Leslie Smith, a commercial landscaper who recently earned an Exporter Award
for his work selling mining equipment to the African market. With the President
and First Lady Michelle Obama concluding their trip to
Africa, I know there will be expanded opportunities in the region and an
increased emphasis on Doing
Business in Africa.
The good news is that there are always opportunities to
accomplish more. The tourism industry can
continue to grow in Las Vegas, exports to Russia can
continue to increase, American companies can help expand
the civil nuclear sector in Southeast Asia.
I hope all of you are as excited as I am to be a part of
this important time in the American economy. We are expanding our role as a
global partner and producer of the highest quality goods and services. This
will ensure our global competitiveness and support necessary economic growth
here at home.
