Manufacturing contributed $75.5 billion to Pennsylvania’s overall economy in 2008, that's 13.6% of the total economic output of Pennsylvania.
In 2009, the manufacturing sector employed 573,600 workers. Manufacturing accounts for 10.2 percent of Pennsylvania’s nonfarm employment. Average annual pay for manufacturing workers was $51,533 in 2009, compared to $44,826 for the overall workforce.
More than one-sixth (17.9 percent) of all manufacturing workers in Pennsylvania depend on exports for their jobs (2008 data are the latest available.) Pennsylvania's export shipments of merchandise in 2009 totaled $28.4 billion. Pennsylvania posted the tenth largest export total among the 50 states that year. Pennsylvania's $6.0 billion increase in exports from 2005 to 2009 was the seventh largest among the 50 states.
